04/18/2004: Robins started
building nests
under our deck this week. I blocked off all of the potential nesting
areas
except one, and set up the birdcam in this
spot. This
year, we’re using the wired black & white X10 camera since it takes
better pictures in low light conditions, and there’s no interference
from
cordless phones & microwaves. We'll see what happens.
04/27/2004: I wasn’t around much
this
week to check the nest, and it’s tough to tell by the pictures, but the
way the mother robin is guarding the nest, I have to assume that she
started
laying her eggs within the last day or two. Robins usually lay
one egg a
day. They usually don't warm up the eggs too much until there are three
or four
in the nest so that all the eggs hatch at the same time. Since robin
eggs
typically hatch in 12-14 days, we should see the eggs hatch around May
11.
05/01/2004: I was able to get a peek into the nest today. There are 3 eggs there.
05/14/2004: All three eggs hatched today.
05/31/2004: It looks like the hatchlings left the
nest the morning of 5/25/2004. This is several days sooner than
expected, but with the steady rain that we've had and the abundance of
worms, they may have developed faster than normal. We had another nest
in the yard where the same thing happened. Since they're gone, I'll be
switching off the camera, but there's a good chance that another pair
of robins will build a new nest within the next couple of weeks. If
this happens, I'll reposition the camera & resume uploading new
pictures.
